This is a magnificent pear-shaped faceted moldavite of enormous proportions!
34.6mm high x 31.8mm wide x 17.9mm deep, with a weight of 91.79 carats--that's nearly 2/3 of an ounce!
I am a Graduate Gemologist, and have been in the jewelry business for over 20 years. I have never before seen a faceted moldavite even approaching this size! I found this piece at an estate sale, and, at first, couldn't believe that it was actually a moldavite… then I saw a few of the tell-tale characteristic "doughnut" shaped inclusions (see the photograph--the inclusions are at 15X magnification) along with other tiny, nondescript inclusions…
Formed by a prehistoric meteoritic impact about 14.8 million years ago, moldavite gemstones of this size and quality are extremely rare-- uniform rough of this size, quality and internal brilliance is close to non-existent. This piece is nearly eye-clean-- only has the minor reflective speckles of the tiny inclusions previously described (i.e., has the tiny inclusions, but no fractures or other blemishes). Truly impressive in size, I have photographed it alongside a quarter to give perspective.
My scanner just didn't do justice to this stone, but did better than I could get from my digital camera-- the actual stone is a gorgeous olive green (like the lighter green areas to the sides).
The stone is set in a simple, but strong, 14 karat gold pendant mounting, weighing 3.48 grams, which presents the stone nicely without detracting from its superb beauty.
